Understanding & Responding to Separation Anxiety

Understanding & Responding to Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is a natural part of young children learning to separate from their parents and carers. Nonetheless, it can be a distressing time for children, families and practitioners. There are ways settings can reduce this distress, and make the process a positive one for everyone concerned.

During this course we will explore the factors that can make the settling in process go as smoothly as possible. We will also look at what to do when children struggle to settle over a prolonged period of time, and how to support children and families when separation anxiety reoccurs, for example due to a new baby or unexpected life events.

During this course you will learn:

  • Why children experience separation anxiety
  • What attachment theory tells us about separation anxiety
  • A relational approach to children’s emotions
  • The role of the key person in ensuring a smooth settling in process
  • How to support families during times of separation anxiety
  • Common mistakes to avoid
